Established in February 1862 by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, a wine merchant originally from Catalonia, northeastern Spain, Bacardi was started in Santiago de Cuba. The first distillery he bought to start off their extra ordinary journey was a tin-roof distillery and cost him only 3500 pesos (appx 16000 INR in today’s world!). In the rafters of this building, there were many bats residing when it was first bought.
And for a person hailing from Catalonia, it was a great omen to have bats present in the place of origin. Moreover, the bats symbolized prosperity, well-being and unity in the family in Cuban as well as Spanish traditions. And these were the reasons enough for Don Facundo’s wife to suggest the use of Bat in the logo of the company. Don Facundo couldn’t agree more!
So, in 1890 when the first commercial logo of Bacardi came into existence, it brought along the picture of a Bat which further in the company’s history remained intact with some changes in appearance. Not only did it make the company and logo easily recognizable, it makes Bacardi only company to use a free-tailed bat as its logo. The relation of a Bat with sugarcane, which forms a key ingredient in rum manufacturing, also is believed to be a string attached to this logo. Free-tailed bats are great pollinators of sugarcane and very efficient insect eaters.
And so Bat found in the distillery continues its presence in the logo of the company till date. It has been a symbol of heritage, a symbol of growth and symbol of the astonishing journey of Bacardi ever since the logo’s inception in 1890.
